KEVIN DRUMM AND RAGE THORMBONES
Chicago sound artist Kevin Drumm collaborates with brass-and-electronics duo Rage Thormbones, who also perform their own acoustic set.
Prolific Chicago sound artist Kevin Drumm gives his first local performance since 2017, delivering a first-time collaboration with the brass-and-electronics duo Rage Thormbones. Since emerging in the late 1990s Drumm has developed a rigorous practice blending noise, delicate free improvisation, and richly marbled drones. Over the years he’s worked with a diverse array of artists including Ken Vandermark, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Taku Sugimoto, Phill Niblock, Jim O’Rourke, Arnold Dreyblatt, Alan Licht, Weasel Walter, Tony Conrad, MIMEO, Mats Gustafsson, John Butcher, and Thomas Ankersmit.
RAGE THORMBONES is an ongoing collaboration between trombonist/composers Matt Barbier and Weston Olencki. They explore the outer reaches of instrumental performance and brass technique, often combining hand-built instruments, extreme preparations, and geometric approaches toward harmony with analog/digital synthesis to create immersive environments of dense sonic forces. They have fulfilled residencies in the composition departments at Harvard, Stanford, and New York Universities, recorded for HatHut Records, and are best friends. Weston lives in New York City and Matt lives in Los Angeles.
