Yo Soy La Tradición: A Puerto Rico Benefit Show with Miguel Zenón and The Spektral Quartet
September 21 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Benefit concert. All Proceeds benefit the Chicago Hurricaine Aid for Puerto Rican Arts.
Spektral Quartet partners with MacArthur and Guggenheim fellow Miguel Zenón for an immersive, concert-length work inspired by the culture of Zenón’s native Puerto Rico. Premiered in September 2016 at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, the work is an eight-movement suite that pairs lush, melodic string writing with complex rhythmic interactions, blurring the lines between jazz, classical, and folk musics. Though it outlines four of Puerto Rico’s musical traditions, “Yo Soy la Tradición” is much more than a collection of dances designed to get you moving: it is a heartfelt, insider-tour of a rich cultural landscape. Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center is honored to host the world CD release of this amazing project.
Chicago Hurricane Aid for Puerto Rican Arts is special fund created by Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center to support professional artists affected by Hurricanes Irma and María, the initiative provides assistance through the following efforts:
Providing direct support to local productions and professional artists that have suffered losses impacting their capacity to make a living in Puerto Rico.
Promoting opportunities for professional Puerto Rican artists from the island to tour and present their work in Chicago, in collaboration with artists from the diaspora.
