Set 2 Kyle Bruckmann/Macie Stewart (violin/voice) Ted Moore (electronics) Trio

“Bay area oboist and composer Kyle Bruckmann pays a visit to his former home to mark his debut on the Option stage. Kyle will perform solo as well as in a trio setting with Chicago musicians Macie Stewart (violin/voice) and Ted Moore (electronics)” – tim daisy/Option Curator

Oboist Kyle Bruckmann tramples genre boundaries in widely ranging work as a composer/performer, educator, classical freelancer and New Music specialist. His creative output – extending from conservatory-trained foundations into gray areas encompassing free jazz, post-punk rock, and the noise underground – can be heard on more than 80 recordings from labels such as New World, Hat Art, Entr’acte, Not Two, Clean Feed, Another Timbre, 482Music and Sick Room. His ensemble affiliations currently include Splinter Reeds, sfSound, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Eco Ensemble, and Quinteto Latino; the most significant projects he has led or collaboratively founded include Degradient, EKG, Lozenge, and Wrack.

Since moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003, he has performed as a substitute with the San Francisco Symphony and most of the area’s regional orchestras while remaining active within an international community of improvisers and sound artists. From 1996 until his Western relocation, he was a fixture in Chicago’s thriving experimental music scene, working regularly with local mainstays including Jim Baker, Jeb Bishop, Olivia Block, Gene Coleman, Guillermo Gregorio, Fred Lonberg-Holm, and Michael Zerang. He is now Assistant Professor of Practice in Oboe and Contemporary Performance at University of the Pacific, and also teaches at UC Santa Cruz, Davis and Berkeley.

OPTION is a weekly music salon on Monday nights at Experimental Sound Studio. It’s programming explores contemporary perspectives on improvisation and composition in a ‘salon’ format, enabling local, national, and international artists to publicly discuss their practice and ideas as well as perform—all in the intimate environment of ESS’s Studio A. Organized by Chicago musicians Andrew Clinkman, Tim Daisy, and Ken Vandermark, the schedule of concerts represents an insider’s view of what is currently most exciting in music and the arts. Shows are professionally recorded by ESS staff, and are streamed live on YouTube. ess.org/option
