“Prolific NY based composer and saxophonist Sam Weinberg and the versatile bassist and composer Henry Fraser perform solo and duo for their first appearance on the Option Series.”
Sam Weinberg is a saxophonist, composer, and improviser living and working in Brooklyn, NY. His active projects include W-2 (with Chris Welcome), BLOOR(with Andrew Smiley and Jason Nazary), Maestro Day (with Henry Fraser and Joe Moffett), and music for solo saxophone. Other improvised collaborations and projects are many and varied and include the likes of Ben Bennett, Jaimie Branch, Sandy Ewen, Weasel Walter, Brandon Seabrook, Mike Pride, Chris Pitsiokos, Ben Gerstein, Mark Morgan (Sightings), and many others.
Henry Fraser (b.1991) is a bassist and composer based in Brooklyn, NY. Henry’s work oscillates around established genres of music, polarized by his exhaustive solo double bass improvisations and the myriad, yet haunting, songs of The Full Salon. Henry has toured throughout the US, Europe, and South America, collaborating with Anthony Coleman, Brandon Seabrook, Sam Weinberg, Charmaine Lee, Carlo Costa, Ryan Power, Chris Pitsiokos, Axel Dörner, Mike Pride, Weasel Walter, Tony Malaby, Mat Maneri, Francisco Mela, Joe Morris, and many others.
OPTION is a weekly music salon on Monday nights at Experimental Sound Studio. It’s programming explores contemporary perspectives on improvisation and composition in a ‘salon’ format, enabling local, national, and international artists to publicly discuss their practice and ideas as well as perform—all in the intimate environment of ESS’s Studio A. Organized by Chicago musicians Andrew Clinkman, Tim Daisy, and Ken Vandermark, the schedule of concerts represents an insider’s view of what is currently most exciting in music and the arts. Shows are professionally recorded by ESS staff, and are streamed live on YouTube.
About Experimental Sound Studio:
Experimental Sound Studio (ESS) is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization dedicated to artistic evolution and the creative exploration of sound. As an international hub for sonic experimentation, ESS nurtures artists, heralds new works, and builds a broad, supportive community of makers, enthusiasts, and creative partners through production, presentation, education, and preservation.
Founded in 1986 by Dawn and Lou Mallozzi, Eric Leonardson, and Perry Venson, ESS has occupied its Edgewater location since 2006. The facility is home to a full-service recording, mixing, and mastering studio for hire; Audible Gallery, a small public space for exhibitions, meetings, workshops, performances, and artists’ projects; and the Creative Audio Archive—an invaluable collection of recordings, print, and visual ephemera related to avant-garde and exploratory sound and music of the last five decades. ESS presents eclectic performance and installation programming, workshops, and artist talks year round—both in the various spaces around the studio and at partner venues around Chicago.
